Newcastle United are delighted to announce the appointment of Steve McClaren as the Club's new head coach.

McClaren joins United on a deal for an initial term of three years, which could be extended to eight.

Managing director Lee Charnley said: "From my first meeting with Steve I knew he was the perfect fit for Newcastle United.

"I am delighted that we have secured the services of one of the best coaches in English football.

"He has 20 years' experience, including for the national team and at the highest level of European competition. His most notable achievements include winning the Eredivisie with FC Twente and guiding Middlesbrough to a League Cup win in 2004 and to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2006.

"He has a proven track record of being an innovative and forward-thinking coach and developing and improving players, which was a key quality we sought in the individual to fill this role.

"Steve also brings with him a great enthusiasm and passion for the job, the Club and the city, which he articulated to me very clearly from the outset.

"This is a huge job which comes with considerable pressures and I am convinced that Steve not only understands the weight of expectation that comes with this role, but that he has the strength of character and professionalism befitting of a club of our size and status.

"Steve has been tasked to secure a top-eight finish in the Premier League and he is also heavily incentivised to try to win a cup competition.

"We recognise supporters' strong desire to win a trophy, an ambition which the Club now shares as Mike Ashley made clear in his comments on the final day of the season. Steve is excited by this and he has our full support in trying to achieve this goal.

"Our immediate focus will be on working with Steve to assess and improve upon our playing squad, as well as appointing individuals to his backroom staff."

Speaking of his appointment, McClaren said: "I am privileged to be appointed head coach of Newcastle United. This is a big club with a wonderful heritage.

"St. James' Park is like a cathedral on a Saturday afternoon, a symbol for the city and I am excited to be given this opportunity.

"I know how important Newcastle United is to the city and the region.

"The supporters are some of the most loyal, passionate and devoted in the world. Despite everything they maintain their faith. We owe it to them to do everything we can to reward them with success.

"There's a lot of work to do, but the Club has made it clear about wanting success and I would not have come here if I didn't believe they were serious.

"This Club has waited far too long to win a trophy. That's one of my primary objectives here.

"I've already won trophies as a manager, and a club the size of Newcastle United should be winning cups and finishing in the top eight in the Premier League.

"I'm determined to give the supporters of Newcastle United a team they can be proud of. The hard work starts now."

Steve McClaren is set to be named as Newcastle United head coach next week.

The former England manager, 54, is due to formalise the move once he has returned from a family holiday.

McClaren, sacked by Derby in May, had turned down the Newcastle job on two occasions - after Alan Pardew's departure in December and for the final three fixtures of last season.

He is set to take over from John Carver, who took charge of the side after Pardew's departure.

Carver had also wanted to take the job on a permanent basis but appears to have missed out.

The 50-year-old, who guided Newcastle to Premier League safety on the final day of the season with a 2-0 win over West Ham, is expected to stay on the coaching staff at St James' Park.

Patrick Vieira was also considered as an option to become the next boss of the Magpies. However, both parties opted not to pursue a possible deal following differences over recruitment and transfer policy.

Spoiler
Having failed to get him over the line in January 2015 and again last month, it looks as if Newcastle have got their man at the third time of asking and will confirm Steve McClaren as their new manager over the coming days.

That decision looks to be a victory for Chief Scout Graham Carr, who gave his backing to McClaren despite support within the club for other candidates including Patrick Vieira and Michael Laudrup.

A native of York, 54 year-old McClaren made over 300 senior appearances in midfield between 1979 and 1992 for Hull City, Derby County, Lincoln City, Bristol City and Oxford United.

Beginning his coaching career at the Manor Ground, he returned to Derby County in 1995 as assistant to Rams boss Jim Smith, moving on to Old Trafford in 1999.

Serving under Alex Ferguson for two years, his first managerial role came at the Riverside in 2001. Five seasons at the smoggies saw a League Cup Final win, UEFA Cup Final loss and a seventh place finish in the 2004/05 Premier League - his only top ten placing.

Succeeding Sven Adult Books as England manager in 2006, McClaren lasted just 16 months with the national side, exiting after a failure to qualify for Euro 2008.

2008 saw him announced as the new coach of Dutch side FC Twente and he secured runner's up and first place finishes in two seasons there, achieved with a team including future Magpie Cheick Tiote.

Opting to try his luck in Germany, McClaren lasted less than one season at Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg and was sacked during February 2011.

Returning to England with Championship side Nottingham Forest for the 2011/12 season, a disastrous start at the City Ground saw him ousted by October, agreeing to a second spell in charge of FC Twente early in 2012.

Failing to recapture the form of his previous spell though, the partnership was dissolved in February 2013 and a brief period of punditry was followed by a short-term role on Harry Redknapp's QPR coaching staff.

Replacing Nigel Clough as Derby County manager early in the 2013/14 season, McClaren steered the Rams to third place in his first season before losing to QPR at Wembley in the Championship playoff decider.

Topping the Championship table various times between October and December 2014, Derby were again in pole position during late February but finished the season in eighth - collecting just 12 points from a possible 39.

Amid claims that a failure to fully dismiss speculation over replacing Alan Pardew at Newcastle had undermined his side, McClaren was sacked by the Rams in late May - less than ten months after signing a new three year deal.
They don't tend to publish rumours, this suggests they're in the know. Thoughts anyone?

In other news, he's to be renamed SportsDirect.com McClaren, to maximise advertising revenue from post-match interviews.

<cry> Well I guess we have to give him a fair crack of the whip, s**** as we might expect him to be. Otherwise we're just shooting ourselves in the foot.

I'm starting to wonder if Graham Carr is the visionary scout we all thought he was a year ago. <ergh>

This club is an absite joke.

Its a disgrace that of all the managers available they can come to the decision to give it to some washed up clown.

Average, very average. Our only hope is that he can do a job like Mark Hughes has done at Stoke who are hard to beat and play some excellent football. I'm not convinced though. I think his spell at Wolfsburg demonstrates his lack of ability at the top level.

He's perfect for Ashley. This is his last big chance, so he'll do, say and take whatever he's told.

Think he'll get Tioté playing back to his best? So we can sell him in Jan?

Middlesbrough - Successful
England - Failed
FC Twente - Successful
VfL Wolfsburg - Failed
Nottingham Forest - Failed
FC Twente - Failed
Derby County - Failed

How can the club look at that CV and give McClaren the job. He's just been sacked for failing to deliver his objectives in the Championship. How the hell can the come to the conclusion that he'll be successful in us mounting a challenge for the top 7 in the Premier League? The club are an absolute disgrace if its true that we've appointed this clown.

If I'm trying to be positive about it, maybe we'll go for Bamford who was on loan at Derby under McClaren and Will Hughes.

McClaren, McCarver, McWoodman and McStone then.

If this about McLaren is true, I will want Carr out too.

9 years since the last game for McClaren in the PL.

This pisses me off so much. All we want is something different not the same old s****. He has just been sacked from a championship club for not being good enough, the lack of ambition at this club is horrendous. Everyone around us are appointing young upcoming managers and yet we continue to employ failing Dinosaurs.

And here's me stupidly thinking we wouldn't go to McClaren for the 3rd f****** time of asking.

First time since the relegation season I've allowed myself to read paper talk and get into rumours. Gave Ashley the benefit of the doubt after his interview and genuinely liked the idea of Vieira.

I don't think McClaren did awfully with Derby overall given they have only finished in the top six once since their relegation and that was under him. That said, they probably should have got play offs this year. He is a better appointment than the last three, so it's progress, but it suggests more of the same sadly. We could have done much better.

At least if Carr suggested him then he knows the sort of players McClaren can get the best out of. As well as that he's at least gone abroad and experienced more continental football styles than most other English coaches, so his style of football has changed from his Boro days (Derby did play some really exciting football last season).

I'm not someone who wants him, but he won't be as bad as some are making out at all!

He wasn't my first choice but it's still better than Carver, Pardew, Kinnear etc.

I just hope our fans give him a chance. A few decent signings are needed to get people feeling good about the upcoming season.
