Ashley: I Want To Bring Success Back To United

Post by Double Agent Bruce a.k.a DAB »

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has spoken about his plans for the future at St. James' Park and his determination to bring success back to the Club.
The Magpies have endured a disappointing 2014/15 campaign and go into the final game of the season with their Barclays Premier League status still not secured.
And when asked where the blame for United's poor season rests, Ashley simply replied:

"My door."I didn't envisage us being in this position at Christmas. Obviously, after the last couple of weeks I'm still a little bit shocked at where we find ourselves today.

"(But) I will continue the policy of investing in the football club.

"We have got the club on a very sound financial footing, so we are able to spend and punch above our weight thanks to the current financial situation the club finds itself in.

"We may have the cart, financially, but we now need to bolt the horse on, and we are going to."

When quizzed about his intentions for the future, Ashley said: "To definitely win something and, by the way, I won't be selling (the Club) until I do.

"(The club is not for sale) at any price. And when I say 'win something', if we ever get into a position of being in a Champions League place, that also counts as winning something.
"From this day forward we will be making our own luck."

I watched the interview, the words were right and he seemed genuine but I'll wait until we see action in summer.

Have to (sort of) applaud him for finally coming out and speaking. Directly to camera too, you could see how nervous he was his voice kept breaking.

All means f*** all though unless he backs it up. Only time will tell I guess.

Yeah, I just think the poisonous hatred should stop and see if he delivers what he said in the interview. I've never seen Colo say that much to the fans.

He did seem to give a damn at the game today. This provides some hope but we'll see. <scratch>

Playing down the importance of being more financially sound than if he hadn't took over with the horse and cart metaphor was positive, and dare I say Souness may have made sense too that 5 years is not long in business terms. We're financially in a good position now it's time to have a go. Time will tell of course but I definitely felt a little bit more optimistic after it.

For those thinking it was a PR stunt to stop riots, I don't actually get that impression. Sky themselves seemed surprised, and the way in which Ashley works (or the impression we get), is that it's quite possible that Ashley just walked down to the sky guys and said right lets do an interview.

Very interesting - if it's real and not ****, this could be a real turning point. I hope to all that's holy that it is real and not **** PR. I'll hold judgement until I see what happens in the summer.

It seemed genuinely off the cuff and not planned. I didn't think there was any other motive behind it persoanally.

If the new manager isn't allowed to bring in his own men, then he clearly isn't serious about what he said.

Let the Sky millions roar the team home. Let the bulging cash account suck a goal into the Gallowgate net when it’s most needed.
I’m out; let them sink or swim without me, for the near future at least.

Video of it for people who haven't seen it.

Seems genuine, maybe he has finally realised he needs to change things. I'm not going to say he deserves a chance to prove that this is a new approach, but I think he should be given one anyway because it will do us no good not to and it was I think a brave move from him to come out and get interviewed which is something he has not done ever before in his entire time here, even when we actually got relegated.

This summer is definitive.

I'm actually more optimistic rewatching this now, versus before the game. The interesting thing I think is where he says 'as of now, we are definitely trying to win something'. It's a change from 'we'll achieve what we can with what we have' to a genuinely positive attitude. We'll find out if it's for real soon.

Maybe his plan was always to just stabilise us, get us profitable and then making a push from that base. Might just be because of the result but I'm definitely optimistic. The managerial decision will be what really tells us what direction we're headed but this seems to bode well.

Yeah, all depends on who he puts in charge.

Regardless of staying up if its Carver I'm done. If it's McClaren I'll be very disappointed.

This was the one bit of the interview that disappointed me. I wanted him to say he was gonna have more of a hands on role but instead he said its Charnleys choice and we know he loves McClaren. <erk>

I'm hoping the fact he knocked us back twice will have us looking elsewhere.
