1. Get Dota 2 on Steam
Visit the Dota 2 Steam page and click the 'Get Dota 2' button. For now, you'll be added to the launch queue, and we'll email you when we are ready for you to come play. The volume of players let in will gradually increase so we can spread the launch load out over time.

2. Sharpen your skills in the New User Experience
Once you're in, you can get a feel for what Dota 2 is all about by playing through the tutorial. After you've mastered some of the basics of the game, we have AI controlled bots for you to battle against, which can be set to a number of different skill levels. You can even grab a group of friends to play against the bots. It's a great way to get started playing Dota 2 and figuring out who will be your first favorite hero.

3. Let the games begin!
Once you are ready to start playing full games via matchmaking, we'll keep an eye on how you're doing and make sure that you're playing against other players of your skill level. There is also a party system, so you and up to four of your friends can all play together on the same team.

---

OP - Anyone got into beta for this? I just got in today and loving it much harder than LoL what im used to though,

I got into the beta this past Feb. It's a great game, it is a remake of the original Dota (same Heroes, skills, items, gameplay etc.). Though every MOBA are good in their own way, I really love Dota 2 compare to others because it is harder which pays back when you've learn it.

PS. Treant Protector has now been added to the Hero rosters :)

Didn't realise we had a Dota thread...

It's over, it's just me and the dotes now. You're gonna have to take the kids and f*** off. <awe>

And what happened to those people who wanted to learn to dote?

Also the game is transitioning into launch over the next few months, will be doing so in batches to control its growth since it's been the most played game ever on Steam despite technically being in closed beta. I still have 25 invites if people want to jump the queue.

Did you get around to it? If not do you need and/or want me to take you through the basics in-game sometime? Presuming you've been watching Daily Dota then you'll be aware of the most important thing; if you play s*** then blame everyone else.

The new tutorials are in along with a limited hero pool (choose from 20 easier to play heroes instead of all 100+) to make it easier for new players. Also Steam have partnered with Twitch.tv now, which for Dota means that you can link your accounts and still get item drops for watching professional games even if you're watching on Twitch rather than in-game.

http://blog.dota2.com/2013/07/the-coils ... nd-us-all/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Today’s update continues the expansion of our training experience for new players.

Play as Sniper in an all new lesson and defeat Tidehunter as you learn more advanced game concepts. Also introduced is the Archronicus, a tome of knowledge containing various artifacts and lore from the Dota universe, which are revealed by completing additional training lessons. Who knows what words of forbidden power are contained within?

Afterwards play the new Limited Hero mode where players choose from a pre-selected set of 20 heroes, designed to help introduce you to the wealth of mechanics Dota has to offer. You can play offline, with friends, or match make with similarly skilled players in the Dota 2 community allowing you to learn at your own pace. We hope this mode will provide a good training ground for new players that are ready experience the game that is Dota 2.

This week, thanks to our friends over at Twitch, you can now link your Steam account to their service. This link makes you eligible for tournament item drops while watching Twitch streams as long you own the ticket for that tournament. We realize that people have different reasons why they prefer to watch in game or via streams and wanted to bridge the gap of features they were missing out on by choosing the service that works for them the most. We hope to expand on the features available via this system and would love to hear what you think we should work on next.

Do you's still play this... I finally, FINALLY, downloaded it at the weekend. I have absolutely no idea why its taking me this long... as its a game i really would have loved. Strange.

Anyway, i can tell this is gonna take a hell of a long time to get used to. Think i'll stay in bot matches for a long time yet!

I'm still active, don't play online all too much though, solo queueing too often results in s*** games and you're stuck in there for a good 40 minutes. I'd rather watch a good match or play on my own terms.

I want to have a go at this since I like the concept but I'm unsure if my laptop will be able to handle the action-packed moments (frame-rate wise) or if I'll ever be any good at the game.

Dota 2 has the potential to run on just about anything, just play around with the settings and google around until you find the right compromise for you.

Everyone is terrible at the game and it's a constant learning experience. You get matched with people of similar skill to you in any case.

This guy is pretty much the definitive Dota for new people guy (lots of videos on his youtube, he's now a pro player in Korea though so that side slowed down), and this is the guide for new players - http://www.purgegamers.com/welcome-to-dota-you-suck" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The game has a tutorial system that isn't great, but gets you familiar with the mechanics before throwing you into bot games, following by players vs bots with a limited pool of 'easy' heroes. From there it's usually a good idea to play more games against bots of increasing difficulty until you're comfortable.

Cheers for that link <ok> I'll have a look.

And my laptop is alright, runs games like Amnesia/Age of Empires pretty well so that should be ok. My only problem is that i'll be basing my skill off those tournaments that you always post <laugh>

Speaking of those, they were doing a stream for people new to Dota or who didn't play it. I heard it was quite good once they got used to it, check out some of the videos here if you just want to see pro games broken down to a basic level - " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And I wouldn't try to compare, they effectively play a different game, use something called teamwork and have crazy mechanical skills.

The Workshop Tools Alpha just begun. http://blog.dota2.com/2014/08/dota-2-workshop-tools/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If that means nothing to you, basically it means the modding tools are out and work can begin on official custom game modes, which is how DotA was first made in WarCraft 3 (and AoS before it on SC), and where genres like tower defence really began to develop.

Even if you give no s**** about Dota, this is probably going to be huge long-term, and they'll likely all be free (as is Dota <whistle>).

Oh, and it's basically Source 2. http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/ ... a_modding/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The noob stream for TI4 was pretty sweet, apart from re-explaining the more simple parts every single match, but then i suppose they have to do that.

Forcing myself to play with new heroes now.

I need to force myself to actually play it online more often, I go months between non-bot games. <neg>
