To be fair this makes a lot more sense in Latin countries for two reasons: first, Spanish and Portuguese names have your maternal and paternal surnames so they're really long (e.g. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pele: Arantes is his mother's name, do Nascimento his father's), and the second is there are a very limited pool of surnames in those countries. About 70% of all Argentinians would share about 10-15 surnames (Gutierrez, Gonzalez etc.).

I was thinking more along the lines of 'Chicharito'.

Also, this is a thread where we are supposed to give examples of things that piss us off that shouldn't, isn't it? Therefore there should be no need for justification. <ok>

Oh absolutely, I wasn't criticising you for it I just thought you/others might be interested in why it happens. (Although in the case of Chicarito - Javier Hernandez is about as common a name as possible in Mexico, hence they call him that over there.)

Apparently I shouldn't be annoyed at being stuffed by Arsenal 4-1, so that.

SOmething I just noticed recently, Sunderland fans never refer to Connor Wickham as "Wickham", they always call him "Connor". DOn't know why but that infuriates me.

I think that genuinely is the reason, like Whickham is a dirty word <laugh>

I understand the lack of surnames and the difference in naming protocol in Latin countries but it still takes the piss a bit. For example Javier Hernandez is no different then Joe Cole, Steven Taylor, Rob Lee, Adam Johnson, Alan Smith etc… etc...

ITV World Cup pundits wearing shorts and flip flops as they were in Brazil. zzzzzzzzzzzzz
Gary Linekers tasche. Makes him look like Dr Watson from Sherlock.
Anything Robbie Savage says.
BBC insisting that because half of the country is female we need female football pundits. Put people on who have been at the top of their game not someone who played for Barnet ladies.
ITV adverts before kick off.
