To be fair this makes a lot more sense in Latin countries for two reasons: first, Spanish and Portuguese names have your maternal and paternal surnames so they're really long (e.g. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pele: Arantes is his mother's name, do Nascimento his father's), and the second is there are a very limited pool of surnames in those countries. About 70% of all Argentinians would share about 10-15 surnames (Gutierrez, Gonzalez etc.).Absent Shola Turkish Talent wrote:Players being allowed to wear nicknames on their shirts.
I was thinking more along the lines of 'Chicharito'.Speedo wrote:To be fair this makes a lot more sense in Latin countries for two reasons: first, Spanish and Portuguese names have your maternal and paternal surnames so they're really long (e.g. Edson Arantes do Nascimento, aka Pele: Arantes is his mother's name, do Nascimento his father's), and the second is there are a very limited pool of surnames in those countries. Oh absolutely, I wasn't criticising you for it I just thought you/others might be interested in why it happens. (Although in the case of Chicarito - Javier Hernandez is about as common a name as possible in Mexico, hence they call him that over there.)Absent Shola Turkish Talent wrote: I was thinking more along the lines of 'Chicharito'.
Also, this is a thread where we are supposed to give examples of things that piss us off that shouldn't, isn't it? Therefore there should be no need for justification.

I think that genuinely is the reason, like Whickham is a dirty wordCisse's Overheating Torso wrote:Whickham is Tyneside full, of Mag Kernts Marra. I understand the lack of surnames and the difference in naming protocol in Latin countries but it still takes the piss a bit. For example Javier Hernandez is no different then Joe Cole, Steven Taylor, Rob Lee, Adam Johnson, Alan Smith etc… etc...Speedo wrote:Oh absolutely, I wasn't criticising you for it I just thought you/others might be interested in why it happens.
