I think we're more likely to play him left back because he's the only one in our team who is competent at left back.
This.

Bit worrying that none of the players mentioned there are defenders.
You must have skim read it and not noticed this bit;

"Confidence is also growing that Newcastle will land Charlie Austin from Queens Park Rangers, while a move for another defender is believed to have been discussed. Northampton Town youngster Ivan Toney could also be drafted in to bolster the squad".

I'm taking that as meaning we are still in the market for another one.

I certainly did <gent>.

Well, that's promising at least. Wonder if Matip is still a possibility.

If we capped off our summer spending by signing Austin and Matip that would be unreal.

Surely that means Toney is the defender or am I reading it wrong?
And in conclusion, how far had you got through reading this before you realised it was my signature?

Toney is a forward so I guess we're after another defender.

Toney is a youth striker. He won't be playing for us, he'll be development squad/out on loan. He's had a bunch of games in League 2 and that's it.

Looks like Mbemba won't be ready in time for Southampton, he's only got the FA endorsement and won't have his actual visa until the middle of next week, so can't see him playing a part

Is Taylor fit? If he can survive his standard three games til Mbemba's ready that works for me.

Yeah but alongside whom? Lacking-match-practice/unfit Colo? Useless Williamson? Inexperienced Lascelles? Injured Dummett? The CB pairing v Southampton, should be Taylor and M'Bemba, if he's fit. Otherwise, we have a serious issue.

I reckon Colo will be back in, otherwise I can handle Lascelles. Let's not forget Mbemba won't be match fit either, at least Colo will have been training with the team.

FFs, until we consider him last resort standard we aren't going anywhere as a team. People are saying he's ok at CB but that's only because his natural position at LB he's rubbish.

I think that's harsh, it's fairly clear CB is his natural position and he's looked pretty decent there in the limited opportunities he's had. Steven Taylor played all his early games at right back, ditto a load of our younger centre halfs.

He's a better last resort than willo, is less injury prone than Taylor and more proven than lascelles. I'd be happy with him as a third choice. Or fourth if one of the feist choice pair Iwade of glass/colo.

Also he's young, he can improve at cb. He may never be outstanding, but we don't have e much better. I'd still like another cb in, but that means getting shot of willo. Who would take him

I'd hope we can all agree Dummett should NEVER take a set piece again

I really hope one of the new lot can take them. Watching Abeid take every corner and free kick was painful.

I agree he is utterly woeful at set pieces, and also too slow to run back to defend when they inevitable either hit the knee of the first man, or fly into row z.
