Newcastle United vs Sunderland AFC, 1 February 2014
So. We grimace our faces at the picture of our dreamboat sailing free from the tempestuous waters of Tyneside for sunnier and richer shores, we get back into a very British mentality after three years of Continental dreaming, and we face our oldest, most bitter rivals just as it seems our season is all but done for.
Newcastle and Sunderland first met in 1883, with the first competitive cup match coming in 1888, when Jack the Ripper was roaming the streets and Newcastle weren't "united" yet.
Since then, the teams have met a total of 143 times - in League, both Cups and in playoffs (never in Europe, thanks to one side letting us down) - ending up with this, the 144th edition of one of the fiercest derbies in British football.
The Past
Despite Sunderland's triumph in the first Derby in 1888, which ended 2-0 to the unwashed, Newcastle have quite considerably taken the lion's share over the past 121 years; in terms of wins, Newcastle have 53 (including 11 league doubles) to Sunderland's 45. However, the last five years have seen possibly the most flammable and fierce derbies in a generation with the emergence of TV coverage and removal of restrictions on away fans as were seen in the 1990s. 2011 saw the Halloween Derby in which Newcastle trounced their Wearside counterparts 5-1 with Kevin Nolan getting a hat-trick. However, the "Black Cats" struck back with the so-called Dirty Knees Derby under short-term disgrace Paulo di Canio in which Newcastle folded to a 3-0 loss. The Toon are looking for their first derby win since mid-2011 when Ryan Taylor put the ball in the mackems' net.

Team News
Newcastle confirmed on Wednesday night the departure of midfielder Yohan Cabaye and minutes later the loan signing of Luuk de Jong, 23-year old Dutch striker, who will be looking to write off some bad form in the Bundesliga and who is presumably available for selection for Saturday's game. He may find his services called up early thanks to the presumptive three-match suspension for fellow loan striker Loic Remy. Both Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse missed Tuesday's game against Norwich due to injury and it is unclear whether they will be returning in time for the match. Captain Fabricio Coloccini, Ryan Taylor, and Gael Bigirimana will miss out due to injury. The Toon come into the derby on mixed form, having lost three, won one and drawn one in their last five matches. They sit 8th in the table.
Sunderland, meanwhile, have three new players to blood against the Magpies - keeper Oscar Ustari, defender Santiago Vergini and left back Marcus Alonso. They are only missing keeper Kieron Westwood and centre back Carlos Cuellar, and come in with better league form than their adversaries - having won two, drawn two and lost one in their last five. They confirmed the signing of Argentinian striker Ignacio Scocco on Thursday morning.
If any new players were to be signed by either team before lunchtime on Friday, they would be eligible to play.
Referee

Staffordshire ref Phil Dowd will be the man in the middle at St James' Park. He famously refereed the 5-1 derby, and his matches this season have included the 2-1 win against West Brom, the 3-2 loss at Everton and the 0-0 early-season draw against West Ham.
Weather
The BBC predicts a damp Saturday afternoon on Tyneside, with sunshine and showers and a temperature of around 5C.

Joint Statement by a coalition of NUFC and SAFC fan clubs
"Two weeks ago fans’ groups and fanzines from Newcastle United and Sunderland launched a successful joint campaign to say “no” to bubble matches.
"Now both sets of fans are linking up to restore pride in the Tyne-Wear derby, championing a white-hot atmosphere and sporting rivalry while rejecting violence.
"Recent seasons have seen an unwelcome level of hatred and disorder around derby games.
"Genuine fans don't want the authorities to have any excuse to cut ticket allocations or restrict travel in future seasons, we just want a game to remember.
"We can keep the passion, but lose the poison. Let's make this a derby to be proud of."
Both Newcastle United and Sunderland AFC have also given their backing to "A Derby To Be Proud Of".
