Matchday thread - Toon v Crystal Palace

Post by UlversToon »

Stolen from NUFC.com

Wednesday sees Newcastle in Carabao Cup Third Round home tie against Patrick Vieira's Eagles.

Kick-off is at 7.45pm and an outcome must be achieved on the night, with the tie going straight to penalties in the event of a draw at 90 minutes.

The match is a sell-out and will be played in front of the largest crowd at SJP in the history of the competition.

That record currently stands at 49,902 who witnessed a Semi-Final victory over Spurs back in January 1976.

The winners advance to Round Four, with ties due to be played during the week commencing Monday December 19th - a week before the Premier League resumes.

That Fourth Round draw will take place on Thursday night following the Manchester United versus Aston Villa tie.

NUFC: Illness should see Callum Wilson drop out of the starting line-up, while the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Jonjo Shelvey, Javier Manquillo, Jamaal Lascelles, Jamal Lewis, Matt Targett, Elliot Anderson, Ryan Fraser, Joelinton and Chris Wood all vying for a recall.

Alexander the rat, Matt Ritchie and Paul Dummett remain out, along with long-term absentee Emil Krafth.

United kicked off their League Cup campaign with a 2-1 Second Round victory at Tranmere Rovers - a tie that saw Karl Darlow play his only game so far this season.

Speaking on Tuesday, Howe gave little away as to whether Nick Pope would keep his place, fit-again Darlow would return or there would be a debut for Loris Karius.

Pope was in the away goal for Newcastle's last home tie in the League Cup, keeping a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw with Burnley before playing his part in a penalty shootout success for the Clarets.

Coral rate this tie as follows:

Outcome after 90 minutes:
NUFC win 3/4
NUFC win to nil 15/8
Any draw 13/5
CPFC win 15/4

Coral price NUFC to win the Carabao Cup @ 12/1

CPFC: James McArthur and Christopher Richards remain unavailable, but Odsonne Edouard may play some part.

The Eagles began this season's League Cup competition with a 2-0 success at Oxford United.

Palace have already visited SJP this season in the Premier League, drawing 0-0. Ahead of their latest Tyneside trip they won 2-1 at West Ham on Sunday.

Referee: Graham Scott - a second sighting of the season for the Oxfordshire official, following his handling of our 0-0 draw at Brighton in the Premier League.

Scott was in charge of United's 2-0 win at Palace in the Premier League back in November 2020.

VAR: Not used in this competition.

UK TV: None - highlights on ITV4 at 10.30pm.

Overseas TV: None

Stats:

The two sides have met just once before in this competition, United winning 3-2 in the Third Round at Selhurst Park in 2014 thanks to Emmanuel Riviere's brace and Paul Dummett's extra-time clincher.

Palace's sole cup conquest of United was a 1-0 FA Cup success on Tyneside in 1907 - the first-ever game between the clubs. Newcastle won each of the five subsequent FA Cup ties, all at Gallowgate.

(For completeness, we'll mention the two-legged meeting in the 1972/73 Anglo Italian Cup; a 0-0 draw in South London and a 5-1 home success at SJP).

Looking forward to an open game here, both teams going for a free hit away from the league. That said I fancy us as I sense a determination in EH to get a good run in this competition.

After ten years of me and my lad coming to support Newcastle my daughter now joins us and gets her first taste of SJP tomorrow night ! Couldn’t be prouder ❤️

Her face when Going Home belts out will be something else altogether

That sounds great, nice moment!

I’m going with my same prediction as for the last 2 games; 6-0.

I think Palace might rotate more than us.

With such clear and well-drilled match tactics, and everyone knowing their roles in the system, we feel so much better prepared to have some squad rotation and not look like 11 players who've never kicked a ball together before - which is how it often felt in cups. People often griped about not playing competitive lineups in cups, but I actually thought a lot of our better players would still play - but mixed with some younger ones there was never any chemistry.

Google twitter football stream

Top link is flash streams. They are really decent but it seems to have mixed up the Nufc match . Showing Italian game on our link. I don't have twitter so I can't comment underneath

A number of today's games are on international streaming services - and I'm surprised given it's also an all-PL fixture we weren't selected for broadcast.

Its pretty scandalous that in this day and age a football game can be so restricted on audience, literally only the 52k people in the stadium can watch the game, its not even like this for friendlies.

As I say these are normally brilliant and the stream on iPad and phones no problem at all plus there's no ads or pop ups .

Ours is the only link that's not showing the right game at the minute . It's changed from an Italian game to Man City v Chelsea now so getting closer. I'll keep trying but here's the links for all games if anyone's Interested.

Cheers <ok>

But I can't even use this. Been timed out half a dozen times just trying to log in. Obviously can't cope with the demand.
