The winter 2021/22 Covid football thread

Post by bodacious benny »

So Spurs are the first to fall victim to a Covid outbreak this winter with 8 players now confirmed as receiving positive tests.

They have asked for their PL match at Brighton on Sunday to be postponed.

Chances are it won't be the first Covid postponement over the next few months.

I hope it gets refused, teams shouldn't be having such large outbreaks at this point, we pretty much know how all these variants spread, I can understand maybe 1 or 2 but to have 8 just tells me they haven't taken every precaution they could to prevent this. Should be made to play youth players or forfeit the game imo.

I don’t know tbh, you can be double vaccinated and take all the precautions and you can still catch it. If you’re working and training in such close proximity pretty much seven days a week it seems like it’s hard to avoid.

I may be a bit cynical but I'd imagine at least half of those weren't double vaccinated. I just find it difficult to believe that every precaution was taken yet 8 cases still happened.

For me, the issue around the vaccination(s) is that people erroneously think it prevents the spread of the virus. It doesn't, and that's been widely reported. It reduces the severity of the symptoms. The issue is though, people assume that with the jabs that they can then go about business as usual, forgetting/ignoring a lot of the procedures and guidelines put in place over the last couple of years. That's part of what's making the infection rate increase again, in my opinion. I agree with Don, I don't think all the precautions were followed or properly addressed. To have 13 (including non-playing staff) test positive all in one go seems to indicate a failure somewhere along the lines.

They should have to play or forfeit the game. If they had 8 players out with hamstring injuries they wouldn't be allowed to postpone the game so having 8 out with illness should be no diffrent.

As long as they have 11 players who test negative on the day of the game, then go ahead as normal.

I wouldn't be too judgemental about Spurs yet, as today's announcement said that omicron cases are doubling every 2-3 days i'm thinking they may be the first of many. If it happens to NUFC as well will we be in favour of forfeiting the game or playing a reserve team? I doubt it.

We could be heading for another complete shutdown, probably short-term but nonetheless.

Yeah we wouldnt "want" that, but if it was the case then I'd be more annoyed at the club than the consequence. Spurs are now at a reported 13 cases, that's pretty ridiculous, there has either been a huge failure to prevent an outbreak or this new variant is so potent that it can circumvent every precaution we can throw at it.

How many player did we have out with Covid when we had a fixture postponed last year? I don't think it was as many as 8.

I can only remember Darlow and ASM being confirmed as having Covid, i think the rest may have been staff, something like 5 player/staff total. I know that back then they were still isolating players and staff who had close contact as it was pre vaccine days so not too sure on confirmed cases.

Come to think of it, it was Lascelles and ASM who had it around the time of the postponement with Darlow coming later in the season. Hayden's I can barely remember when that one was.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with Leicester v Spurs considering Leicester played without their missing players and battered us. Surely Spurs can't get it postponed.

Spurs have enough players to field a starting XI so I can't see why they'd postpone that one too. They've now had time to put in new measures for training etc.
