I think the comment was aimed at the journos though. Obviously we are all gonna share any possible snipets on here
Again, you're blanketing the entire medium. What people say regarding possible transfers is more often unreliable than it is accurate in all media, it comes down to being selective over what you choose to lend any credence to.
I do take your point, but you note yourself that one should be selective in their findings. :)

Also, If I had good cause to believe it was a genuine account then I might use it as a source. As a Journalist, they should be expected to check their sources, if they are not prepared to do that then they should not use that medium, surely? The fact is that these sources are not that easy to check in a reliable way. If a guy in the pub tells me he noticed Defoe being dropped off at Fullham (just random examples) then I would not rush to publish it in a national paper! (or on their website, in this instance)

But if Defoe told you in a pub that he was going there himself, it's safe to say that it'd be used. So you couldn't write off the whole 'guy in a pub told me' medium. What Cal is saying is that its daft to say "never use twitter as a source" because it entirely depends on the person posting there - it could be a reliable source.

I was never saying this journalist was right to quote a fake twitter account, I was saying that you and Nick were wrong to completely discount twitter as a possible source for anything. Now you've come full circle and taken to effectively repeating my points back to me.

lol fair enough. But how do you know if the account is really genuine? If you speak to defoe in the pub then yeah, if you read a post from him on an account on twitter which you have reliably confirmed with him then great. It's more like a bloke in a toilet cubical (at the pub, if you like consistencey :) ) telling you he's Defoe and that he's signing for Fullham. You can't see him, you don't know.

At the end of the day, a responsible journalist should only publish responsibly sourced information. Just grabbing anything that gets printed on twitter is worse than less than unhelpful :)

So I agree with the critisism that it should not be used. At least not by a journo who is not prepared to do the backround work. IE not in that fashion and not in respect of the journo and info in question here <ok>

Celebrity accounts on twitter can be verified with a blue tick, tells you immediately whether it's real or not.

Ah, now that's helpful!

Presumably this account didn't have one? I don't use it so...

No, it was a very obvious fake. It frequently tweeted in English saying stuff about Newcastle.

There are few official ones without the tick as well, which confuses matters a tad.

Fair enough. I didn't believe in my argument anyway. I had originally 'aimed' the agreement (if you will) at irresponsible, lazy journos specifically, but decided on a little debate rather than just saying that. <ok> <laugh>

Edit - sorry, I blame the lack of mackems. Perhaps I should use Not606 in conjunction. Proper chat here, wind-ups there <scratch>
