That guy with the radio stream was class. Hope he does it again for future none televised matches. If only so I can bid on his step ladders.

Good result and a decent performance from the sounds of things. Sounded professional which isn't a word you usually associate with Newcastle and cup runs.

Happy overall.

Jak Alnwick making some great saves to keep Port Vale in it against WBA apparently

Good nights entertainment. I missed the first goal, even though I was there before kick off queues at the turnstiles meant I was late getting in. Got more than my moneys worth with the rest of the game though.

Thauvin looked a different class, fast, clever and good technical ability. He also has a good set play. Best set piece I've seen from a Newcastle player in years. I know it was only Northampton but even so the signs were there. I expect he'll start against Arsenal as we took him off despite him running the show.

De Jong had a good game as well. He's an extremely intelligent player. Sometimes to clever for his teammates. Perez was another who had a good game. Worked very hard, he's not a lone striker though, definitely better in attacking midfield. Janmaat was great as well although he didn't really have to defend at any point, he was pretty much a winger. Williamson was fairly solid defensively and got a goal as well.

Lascells looked a bit nervy but coped ok for the most part. Aarons and Haidara didn't have the best of night, nothing bad but nothing good either. Tiote wasn't at the races and Gouffran was only a little bit better than him in midfield. Darlow was a bit dodgy with his kicking. On one occasion he tried to pass it to Lascells but somehow managed to pass it to a Northampton play. On another Janmaat was wide open and Darlow was under know pressure, an easy kick along the floor was an option but Darlow punted it through the air towards him instead and Janmaat couldn't keep it in play (because of the s**** kick not Janmaat himself).

Mitrovic, Colback and Toney did nothing if note other than Mitrovic starting on someone because he fancied a scrap. Unfortunately the ref stopped Mitrovic before he took it any further than squaring up to the guy.

Overall a decent team performance. Of those who played I expect Thauvin to start against Arsenal. Along with Perez. De Jong and Janmaat gave a good enough account of themselves to warrant a start but I'm not sure they'll come in. I'd be tempted to drop one of Colback/Anita and push Wijnaldum back to free up the number 10 role for De Jong, with Perez and Thauvin left and right and Mitrovic upfront. Though that might be too attacking against Arsenal. We might need to go more defensive.

Some pretty nice link up play by the looks of it <awe> Especially between Thauvin, de Jong and Perez. Janmaat's goal <awe>

Thauvin actually has a decent delivery. Something our entire team apparently lacked all these years...

I agree about Thauvin's delivery. We'll score from corners and free kicks this season if he's taking them <ok>.

It doesn't matter how many times I watch it, I still can't get my head around how he actually managed that.

In reading through all the comments, it seems that Thauvin did well in his first full-fledged game. While it is true that in was only Northampton Town, at least he was able to show off a little bit of his talent. I hope that he will be able continue helping the team with such performances in your next game.

Couple of points:

1. Missed the first 18 mins because of the queues! bloody hell.
2. Amazing turn out.
3. Refreshing line up for a cup game against lower league opposition.
4. Thauvin and Janmaat were a different league to the other 20 on the pitch.
5. Perez looked tired and uninterested second half.
6. Darlow and Lascelles looked nervy.
7. Aarons had some great touches but hesitated too much going forward.
8. Tiote looked alot fitter.
9. De Jong had great movement but still a bit rusty.
10. Williamson did well but maybe he has found his preferred opposition?

I did notice Janmaat and Willo arguing ALOT and at one point Willo was just telling him to f*** off everytime he spoke.
All and all, a good game to watch and our right wing is going to be a beast this season, can't wait for Saturday!
