The fact the England team look so disinterested and fold at the slightest challenge argues against this so called superior english mentality better than words ever could.

And the misplaced idea that we don't need to focus on petty things like technical ability and skill because we're better than that due to our grit and determination is why our football is forever playing catch up to others

Mourinho's first Chelsea? Or did you mean solely English players?
Exactly, 10 years ago and it's a stretch saying they were "built" on English players.

Look at what any Arsenal fan says about Gibbs, he's useless going forward. Relatively decent defensively but Monreal is much better going forward. Thought we'd know by now that surplus to requirements at top clubs doesn't mean they'd be top signings for us.

With Schmeichel, Stam, Keane and Johnsen as the tough spine?

Yes, but you also had the Neville brothers, Beckham, Butt, Scholes, Cole and Sheringham that were all regulars.

Sheringham only started 11 games that season.

Also had Giggs, Irwin, Yorke, Blomqvist, Berg as regulars. Was probably one of the first successful sides to have a heavy foreign influence. I was young at the time so could be wrong.

You have to build on a good team spirit. Our squad from a few years ago with Nolan, Barton, Taylor, Taylor, Carroll, Ameobi was entertaining to watch and you felt more of a connection with the team. I'm not suggesting for a minute that that team could win the league but at least it made it more of a pleasure to follow Newcastle because you got the feeling everyone had each other's backs and that they cared what the supporters thought.

I think England is different. There's a stupid amount of pressure heaped on from the 'England Expects' media, the flags on vans and hanging from windows. I get the feeling that people cling to the national side in an attempt to cling to a national identity that doesn't exist in our culture anymore. A lot of people use England football as an excuse to be racist and proud.

Breaking News on Sky Sports can often be that there is no news at all.

"Breaking News: We understand that Newcastle have no bid £18m for Berahino."

can foreign players not do that like? there is no trait in football for players that is intrinsic to only the English.

Queue SkyBet sticking odds up on likelihood of Doumbia going to Newcastle, only for there to have been no bid at all.. #racket

I didn't say foreign players couldn't and I didn't say it was exclusive to England players or that I wanted a squad of 25 Englishmen. Just that I would like a spine of English players because, from my perspective, we have had more English players in the recent seasons who seemed to show a bit of spirit that we have had foreign players. I'd be interested in how many non-English/British players you can name from the last few seasons who you've felt have shown proper leadership and desire. I'm not saying you won't be able to, just that I reckon the number of English players you could name in the same category would trump them.

And I'm not trying to suggest that team spirit is the only factor to get you winning but I'd say it's a decent foundation.
