Matchday thread - Magpies v Eagles

It's been that long since our last game I can't even remember either who we played or the score.

Newcastle return to Premier League action on Sunday, facing the Eagles at Selhurst Park in the 50th league meeting between the two sides.

It's a 2pm kick-off live on Sky Sports.

Following a 2-0 home success in January, United go in search of their first PL win double over Palace since the 2013/14 season.

Team: Speaking to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe said that Lewis Miley was in line for a return but both Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar remained out.

Sidelined for the club's last 11 games in all competitions, Bruno isn't predicted to return until the Arsenal game later this month after suffering with illness (mumps) since returning from his injury rehabilitation in Brazil.

Schar is undergoing a further operation - this time on his foot - and is expected to miss another month on top of the 21 league and cup fixtures he's already sat out.

Sven Botman underwent facial surgery in the wake of the derby loss and could be involved at Palace wearing a protective face mask.

Joelinton goes into this game on nine PL bookings - if he makes it ten against Palace he'll land a two game ban, but that doesn't happen then the threat will be lifted.

Coral rate this game as follows:

NUFC win 29/20
The draw 12/5
CPFC win 9/5

CPFC: Eddie Nketiah won't be available while both Evann Guessand and Cheick Doucoure face late fitness tests.

Ahead of our visit, Oliver Glasner's side beat Fiorentina 3-0 at Selhurst Park in the first leg of their Europa Conference League quarter-final on Thursday night.

Palace's away form remains better than on home territory; winning just three of their 15 PL games at Selhurst, drawing seven and losing the other five.

Their home scoring record of 14 goals is the second-fewest in the PL, one more than Nottingham Forest.

Referee: Andy Madley - third Magpie posting of the season for the West Yorkshire official, following the 2-2 home draw with Chelsea and 2-3 loss to Brentford at Gallowgate.

VAR: Craig Pawson

Not for me, sideways step at best.

Said before, Iraola would be the one to target - no doubt at all. Even better if brought the likes of Senesi, Rayan, Scott with him <laugh>

Of all the lower/midtable managers potentially on the move this summer, Iriola probably is the best (after Howe). However there's going to be plenty of clubs with bigger pulling power in need of a new manager. Arsenal, city, Liverpool, man u could all be up for grabs. As well as potentially both Madrid clubs.

I do like the idea of Iraola ... he can pull good players from the Spanish & Portuguese league where he has experience. But his track record shows hes quite selective when doing that - choosing only players that he believes will fit EPL style.

Think Alonso will go to Liverpool . Iraola isnt a big enough name for RM I think . Arteta is going nowhere.

Iraola is very ambitious and would probably jump at the chance of coaching a club of our size .

Must admit- I starting to feel that Euro experience is what we need . Think Eddie has done fantastic in 4 years - but we've hit a ceiling

Howe's got a better CV than both Iraiola and Glasner IMO.

Glasner has won the Europa League and FA cup, so can’t really say Howe’s CV is better.

Also not saying I want Howe to go or Glasner to come in (I already said he was a sideways move at best), just hypothetical chat.

Bizarre, 3 weeks prep and all he's come up with is Osula starting and Murphy in as captain, kept £120m of forwards (£170m if you include Elanga) on the bench.

Feel he's hit panic mode here. Knows he's finished in the summer.

So out of all the summer signings only Ramsdale makes the starting 11.

No Sarr on Wharton in the Palace starting XI, two of their best players. No excuses here.

Living in dread over this game, imagine Brennan Johnson scores today.
