It isn't my intention to start a religious debate on this thread but seriously?

Yes Dawkins can come over a bit pompous at times but if you are going to reach that conclusion based upon one book by Dawkins then I have to assume you haven't read the bible. I could come up with dozens of words to describe "God" based on that man made anthology and insufferable would probably be the politest by far. I hope god doesn't exist because he would hate me almost as much as I would detest him.

I'm a pretty solid atheist but I also dislike Dawkins, he's just abrasive. He also speaks arrogantly on areas of science he isn't expert on. To quote Feynmann "In this age of specialization men who thoroughly know one field are often incompetent to discuss another. The great problems of the relations between one and another aspect of human activity have for this reason been discussed less and less in public"

Also he tried to get my (crazy religious) school shut down on the basis of mistruths. Yes they bible bashed but the kids ignored it, the majority came out as militant atheists.

I preferred Christopher Hitchens 'God is Not Great'. I think he's a more engaging writer and focuses on culture more.
I've read that too was quality. Currently reading The End of Faith by Sam Harris.

Anyone interested in the Third Reich might like HHhH, might be a bit light if you're very familiar with the subject but very well written and a captivating story.

Looking at getting Max Hastings Catastrophe: Europe Goes to War 1914 at some point in the near future, his book on the Korean war was excellent.

Half way through 'Up There : The North-East, Football, Boom & Bust' and to be honest I'm bored.
It's meticulously well researched with good interviews, but it's just so dry and repetitive.
Lad grew up in mining town playing footy on the streets to escape mines-> local club overlooked him -> moved to North West -> success
There's interviews with the right people, but it lacks personality. It also jumps around timelines loads, so hard to see a progression or change.

Just finished Dog Stars. It's really good. It's about this guy and his dog living out in the middle of nowhere when the world ends. Very creatively written and totally captivating.

Re-reading People of the Abyss by Jack London. Anyone who likes Down and Out In Paris & London should give this a shot, it's the direct inspiration for Orwell's book and a massive influence on Orwell in general. American guy goes voluntarily homeless in 1902 in London and documents the life and the people he meets.

While it's not hilarious, it is more than 0.000000000001% humorous which is infinitely more than anything that f***ing cockend ever produced.
