When I opened this thread I was solo confused. I have never owned either of those cars unfortunately (and never will).

I only passed my test two years ago and since then I've only had Vauxhalls as company cars. A 1.4 07 plate Astra, an 09 plate 1.8 Insignia, and currently a black 60 plate 1.6 Astra.
For the last 6 years or so my Mrs has had several Fiestas and a Micra, and for the last three she's had an absolute skip of a black 54 plate Fiesta which was rusting and with disgraceful brakes. By far the worst car on the street and a total death trap. So I bit the bullet earlier this year and made us buy our first car together, and the first one I've ever owned personally...

And god I love it. 1.4 Golf TSI. Don't be fooled by the engine size, it can do 0-60 in under 9 seconds and is quiet and comfortable doing well over 100mph. Faster than anything else I've driven by some stretch, and engineering wise is in a different league.
EDIT: And it also looks like this inside

Audi A4 or BMW 3 Series next I reckon. German cars

You can't go wrong with German cars. I've had a BMW 1 Series and now got an Audi A4. Both are absolutely bullet proof mechanically speaking, comfortable and smooth to drive and you can cruise at speed with no fuss at all.

I've been looking at getting a MK7 VW GTi, they are sexy cars!
The only down side is that they are pricey, i've saved up 13k so far and still have a little way to go before i'd purchase one.

My car history...
Nissan Sunny Estate (massive)
Nissan Micra (tiny but fast)
Fiat Punto (broke a lot)
Seat Ibiza (great car)
Seat Leon FR (even better car)
Seat Leon Cupra R (308bhp after fiddling but horrible to drive)
Ford Focus (boring)
Thinking about a Golf R next

Re: Your First Car
A 1999 "mystic teal" Toyota Corolla VE when I was in Canada. Bought it for $1200 and it was an absolute tank considering I crashed it in the snow five times, drove it 28,000 miles in 9 months and sold it for scrap in the USA for $600 when I was done with it. Christened it Demba Ca, then Yohan when he f***ed off in January 2013
