When was the last genuinely exciting England match?

I would say Italy at the World Cup was a good game where England fought hard even if they ultimately lost, but it obviously depends on when you fell out of love with the national side. The last time I felt genuinely great about being an England fan was when we beat Germany 5-1, the last tournament I felt excited going into was the 2006 World Cup.

I wouldn't call the Italy match exciting. The 5-1 was probably it tbh.

Welbeck 1-0.

Welbeck should be starting ahead of Rooney.

You do realise they both started today right?

Good start for England, hope we can qualify a bit more convincingly than we did last time.

You do realise that only happened due to Sturridge being injured right?

Thought it was obvious I was meaning Welbeck, Sturridge, Stirling ahead of Rooney, Sturridge, Stirling.

Ah, my mistake, I wondered if you thought he'd come on as a sub. You make a good point, though it's worth noting that Rooney was instrumental in Welbeck's first, made a driving run from midfield you wouldn't get in your first combination. A Welbeck/Sturridge pairing would be good at that final "cutting edge", but lose that link with the midfield.

Good to see England have some competition for places again, at least. It'll go out the window the moment Rooney or Hart gets injured, but it's a nice thing to have at the moment.

I'm not convinced you can play Welbeck and Sturridge, or at least not without massively marginalising one of them a la when we tried to play Ba and Cisse in a 4-3-3. They can both do the wing job, but both would prefer to play through the middle, and if another decent winger comes along to play opposite Sturridge (Chamberlain, Walcott if ever fit?) I'd say its one or the other. Rooney should be playing top of the midfield three.

They formed a good partnership when they played up top together for the U21s. That was part of a front 2 not a 4-3-3 though. Although with this midfield diamond we played tonight we had to up top so if we persist with that it shouldn't be a problem. Would mean dropping Rooney though.
