I have to think he's good enough to fill one of our many empty striker spots. It's weird how Gomis is now our plan B, back up option, when we've been chasing the guy for atleast the past 6 months. More smoke and mirrors?

Don't want him at the expense of a better player. If we're going to sign 2 strikers this window they should be 2 more reliable strikers than Gomis. If we're getting 3 with Gomis as cover, I don't have a problem with it.

I'd rather have him than a better player. But I'd be worried if we said no to him because we'd probably fail to get the better player and then try to sign BentBigiInTheMiddle wrote:Don't want him at the expense of a better player. We were first linked to him just before the 2010 World Cup.

Our needs have fluxuated though. It was only a couple years ago we looked pretty set for starting-quality strikers with Ba and Cisse, at which point he would have been a good back-up to them. Now we need a consistent scorer to lead the attack, and he should only be a plan B compared to better alternatives.Jaiston wrote:Think we've been after him for years, never mind 6 monthsnufc1991 wrote:It's weird how Gomis is now our plan B, back up option, when we've been chasing the guy for atleast the past 6 months. Arriving in Swansea for talks today, £80k per week.
I know it's big wages, but the reality of football today is that you need to pay that kind of money for a player at his level.
One of the knock on effects of TV money going up is that players will now demand more money. They're not just going to sit back and let the club bank all the extra cash.

I know we're in no place to be picky about which players the clubs sign but Gomis for £80k/week? No way.Bodacious Benny wrote:Arriving in Swansea for talks today, £80k per week.

Naturally, the average PL wage is going to increase for reasons given but if we're paying that much for that kind of player it sets a precedent- we should be paying £100k/week+ for players like Cabella if this is the case.
Re: The Bafetimbi Gomis Thread
£80k a week for someone that was our B choice (supposedly) is absolutely crazy.

It's crazy, but with massively increased revenues from TV I think that the 'average' wage for a middle of the road player will quickly jump.
There are plently of worse players out there than Gomis picking up £50k per week as it is.

Our transfer and wage budget doesn't seem to increase with the current rate of inflation in football. We really need to adjust our budget accordingly or we will never be able to progress.

Every other club seems to adjust accordingly so they can still lure the best players. We're still banding about the same wages as 3 years ago and football has changed. It's a bad change, but we can't deny it.

Looks like another striker linked with us is going to Swansea, could this also mean that Bonys career with them is over? Can only see him joining a CL club.

Nah, its Michu thats off apparently. Although, theyre wanting £12M for him.
Just shows how much we actually wanted him though. Happy to let the saga drag on as always.

Give him 80k then everyone else we go for will demand higher wages, current players will demand higher wages, TV money isn't there for the sole benefit of a players wallet, you have to be sensible with it and still budget.

I agree it's dangerous, but most other clubs are paying more money so who will we be left with in the transfer market if we don't act accordingly? I'm not saying we should pay over the odds, but we should pay the 'going rate' else we'll be left with the dross.Le Mighty Buche wrote:Give him 80k then everyone else we go for will demand higher wages, current players will demand higher wages, TV money isn't there for the sole benefit of a players wallet, you have to be sensible with it and still budget.
I think Gomis would be a regular if he came here personally.
