I made my first 606 account after lurking for a while in Jan 08.
Three years and a week of mostly lurking until Not606, then a year and a week there until joining this place.

Statistics don't 'prove' anything, they are an inference.Goat wrote:

That wasn't the point of your nit-picking though. This is what happened:
1). DarrasHallStalker said about Rooney, and I quote, "He's not even a very good player.
This is even when 94 goals/assists in 111 games really isn't that far off and still proves fine well that he's a good player and that the statement "he's not even a very good player" is ridiculous.
Are you telling us he is worth £300k per week ?

Re: £300k per week deal for Wayne Rooney
Money is relative in football. For Man United's brand they need Rooney, especially now that the club seems be falling apart. Based on footballing reasons is he worth that amount per week? No, but you could say the same thing for 90% footballers and their weekly wage.DarrasHallStalker wrote:Statistics don't 'prove' anything, they are an inference.Goat wrote:

Are film stars worth their money? DiCaprio made 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and 'The Great Gatsby' last year and made $30m

Re: £300k per week deal for Wayne Rooney
The only thing I'm calling you out on is that you said Wayne Rooney "isn't a very good player", which is a ridiculous statement. It's debatable whether he's truly world class, and debatable whether he's worth £300k, but he is a very good player.DarrasHallStalker wrote:Statistics don't 'prove' anything, they are an inference.Goat wrote:

Any forward who can get almost a goal or assist per game in the PL is bloody good. It's really impossible to argue with that because any club in the PL would absolutely love to have a striker who can have that sort of attacking output and contribution to the team, so that definitely makes him a good player.

Re: £300k per week deal for Wayne Rooney
Rooney may be over-rated, but he's definitely at least a good player.
Is he worth 300k a week? No, but Man Utd have to pay it. Even in current overinflated market conditions, that's too much. But Utd are struggling to keep their best players/stay at the top, if he leaves it will be a big thing. So he's so important to them it makes sense to pay that.

Re: £300k per week deal for Wayne Rooney
In my view, Rooney is a top, top player. I'd probably put him in the world class bracket personally.
A Man Utd team built around him in the heart of the attack has won the Premier League 5 times, the Champions League once and been runners up in the Champions League twice. You don't achieve that sort of thing unless you're a f***ing good player. Rooney has often been the one leading the team forward and is rarely ever being carried by the team, so it just goes to show his importance in all of those achievements.
Not too long ago he even managed 27 goals and 4 assists in 32 PL apps when he was played as an outright striker. Van Persie had a similar record in the same season yet everyone w**** over him whilst claiming that Rooney isn't that good and is overrated by many.
I don't think he's worth £300k per week, but that's only because Ronaldo and Messi get paid similar amounts and they're obviously a fair bit better. However, it's more than just the footballing player to Man Utd. Rooney is a big part of their global brand and they will need to pay over the odds to tie him down now that CL football isn't a certainty for a while.
