Do you have to run it?
Can I walk it or is that not allowed?

If you google great north run you can enter an online ballot to try to get a place (entry closes soon). Some people do walk it. A guy had a fridge freezer on his back last year and walked the course....

So, yeah, yesterday I found out for certain I'm running this in September.

Any advice or tips from someone who has done this before?

Best of luck with it.

I ran a half marathon years ago and started training a good few months before hand getting to a speed I was comfortable with and could maintain for thirty minutes and then started to extend the running time gradually to last about an hour. I could take a break, walk for a bit and then start again.

Yeah, I'm just focused on building up distance at the moment. Printed off a training schedule and everything <diva>.

For distance running I find doing a variation of long slow and short fast runs helps build stamina quite quickly. Have a day of doing intervals or hill climbs every now and again too - this really boosts your fitness. Depending on your starting point and how much effort you put in you should get pretty fit in 8 to 12 weeks.

My daughter done it last year. She didn't run all the way, just most of the way, but still finished it and she was over the moon. I'd try it myself if they shortened the distance to, say, 100 metres, as long as I was allowed to run half way and walk the rest. <laugh>

I have never done the GNR but know the route well. My mate did it a few years back and trained with me through 4 to 6 mile runs three times a week. They were varied in speed depending on whether we had hills to contend with but generally were 50mins or less. When he did the GNR he said running with us was significantly harder <laugh>

I'm doing it this year for the second year in a row <neg> I haven't really ran since I did it last year so my times were absolutely shocking when I started training in January. Haven't ran much this month because work has been mental but my times are improving.
