Re: Xbox ONE Thread
Launching worldwide this year. Based on the conferences so far PS4 has the edge though in my opinion. Hopefully E3 will be better from both parties though. This event was never going to be about the games but 15 exclusives, 8 of which being new IPs, is a good sign though.

What are the major changes Cal? Why does the PS4 have the edge?

Re: Xbox ONE Thread
Sony targeted gamers with their press conference, went comparatively all out on specs which actually sound impressive for a console. Xbox event was a rough overview of the new kinect integration and other more fanciful stuff which would appeal to the people who watch Spike TV at 10AM and impress them. All about the mass market stuff (cable/IPTV, sports, Call of Duty) and empty buzzwords. They quickly glanced over anything like specs (although blu-ray drive, 500GB hard drive on all of them, 8GB of unspecified RAM, DVR functionality), but they're doing a panel on that at 8PM which will hopefully be more illuminating. E3 is when things will get interesting though.Magnifique Georges wrote:What are the major changes Cal? Why does the PS4 have the edge?
From one of those Wired links.
Interesting that from the off they're going with a single 40nm chip. Also they can offload some work to Microsoft's "Azure" cloud, which I guess could lead to a gradual transition to using the One more as a streaming box than a console.Quantifying graphical performance is notoriously squishy. That being said, Microsoft touts the Xbox One as delivering 8 times the graphic performance of the 360. If you were to go by raw transistor count, that performance jump would be closer to tenfold: the Xbox One boasts 5 billion to the 360’s 500 million. More concretely, those paltry 512 MB of memory have been boosted to 8 GB.
As PC gamers know, though, the more horsepower you’ve got under the hood, the more heat you generate; the more heat you generate, the more airflow you’re going to need to dissipate that heat. Usually, that is going to come from fans, but the engineering team kept things quiet by shrinking a number of internal components for better airflow within the console. Allow me a few sentences of total geek-out on this: A new 500-GB hard drive was designed in-house, likewise a custom-built Blu-ray–capable optical drive. A single 40-nanometer chip contains both the CPU and GPU rather than the two dedicated 90-nm chips needed in the 360. In fact, a custom SOC (system on a chip) module made by AMD contains the CPU/GPU chip, the memory, the controller logic, the DRAM, and the audio processors, and connects directly to the heat sink via a phase-change interface material. Whew.
Fancy. This time around, a 1080p camera enlarges the sensor’s field by 60 percent—a fact that the entertainment division’s lanky hardware guru, Todd Holmdahl, demonstrates for me by walking his 6′ 4″ frame toward the sensor. Even 3 feet away, the Kinect’s onscreen display clearly registers his entire body, and he still has room to lift his hands above his head.
They've claimed no always online. Everything installs to HDD by default and ties to your account, no need to have disc in after then. Fee for someone else to use that disc to install to someone else's Xbox and account. No answer as to whether you can just play from a disc or install offline yet.
Not backwards compatible.
Controller is much the same, three main changes being the D-Pad doesn't look anywhere near as s***, force feedback in the triggers and the battery pack is now in-line.

Re: Xbox ONE Thread
I'm still not sure about backwards compatibility to 360 games, or the use of pre-owned games with this cloud service or possible "always online" feature.
I like the look of it and the controller, plus the start/select buttons are now gone, replaced by a multi-tasking menu button and I think a screenshot button.
I'll be looking closely at E3 in June that's for sure!

Re: Xbox ONE Thread
Thanks for that
Interesting, so time will tell which is the more impressive console but PS4 had the better pitch... If Xbox make you pay for online again and PS4 don't then I'd be tempted to change though I understand (perhaps incorrectly) that the PS3 online is inferior to the 360 in terms of matchmaking, server ect. I have to say I really, really like the 360, the graphics, the controller ect far and above the playstation3, of which we had 2 in my house at Uni, but I don't know if that's because I have merely adjusted due to too many hours spent on the console.

Regarding the TV stuff, like US only at launch, but this quote from Adam Sessler shows that it should have good coverage post-launch.
"Don Mattrick confirmed to me that the television initiative is currently designed for 41 different countries."

I think it's more likely the left one is a pause/settings button, the other being the task switcher/alt-tab button, since they made such a fuss over being able to quickly switch between things, and it's always good to have a tactile input to go with voice and gesture.Magpie Fozz wrote:I'm still not sure about backwards compatibility to 360 games, or the use of pre-owned games with this cloud service or possible "always online" feature.

Yeah, certainly going in a different direction which is good. I know it was pretty much guaranteed, but I'm very happy it has a blu ray player, if I buy it I won't need my PS3 or a PS4.Cal wrote:I think it's more likely the left one is a pause/settings button, the other being the task switcher/alt-tab button, since they made such a fuss over being able to quickly switch between things, and it's always good to have a tactile input to go with voice and gesture.Magpie Fozz wrote:I'm still not sure about backwards compatibility to 360 games, or the use of pre-owned games with this cloud service or possible "always online" feature.

As for the Halo TV series they announced, looking at Forward Unto Dawn mini series quality, it's certainly something they can pull off, and very well I think.

I missed the presentation but I just came here to say that the name is horrible.

Why is it called Xbox one?
Because you take one look at it and walk away.

All in all, I'm massively underwhelmed from both the PS4 and XboxOne presentations. I'm hoping for something big at E3 now.

Re: Xbox ONE Thread
I've always been a Playstation owner since the PS1 was first launched but I had thought this year about maybe switching over to the XBox as both companies release new consoles.
I wasn't blown away utterly by the PS4 launch so looked forwards to Microsoft's PR for their console and all I can say is that I'm very underwhelmed by what they've presented.
To date, Sony have the upper hand for gamers based on the two presentations so I'm looking forwards to E3 to make my choice.

Also, the XBox One looks like an 8-track player I once owned in 1983...
