Anyone else not really looking forward to Saturday?

Post by Paullow »

i dont necessarily mean spurs, just the start of the season in general?

probably just a come down from the olympics and bad timing considering we have a team to be proud of and on the back of our best season in years.

i'm just not feeling it at all at the moment. i have hadly been on 'newcasle united' chat since the end of last season. i was constantly checking to see who we are linked with, who we have signed etc, but havent really been arsed these last 3 weeks or so.

just the thoughts of the rooneys, coles, suarez etc back on our screens, and sky boasting about the beautfiul game etc, when in reality its been ruined by the likes of city, psg, chelsea, even qpr now spending unheard of amounts of money. look at city's squad - oozing quality throughtout - 20m players left right and centre - while we are struggling to fund 6m-7m for players. the coles, rooneys etc screwing clubs over for that extra 50k a week. teams like norwich and later ipswich used to be able to battle and finish 3rd and 5th - that just wont happen anymore. we maybe are classed as a 'top 7 club' now? but it feels like the rest are just making up the numbers and 11 or so clubs would be happy with a 17th place finish now - what's the point.

i am looking forward to our european adventure, but i just cant seem to get excited / up for this new season.

please tell me i am not the only one, and by saturday i will be buzzing again 8)

I see what you mean, the Olympics had a much better all round spirit to it compared to football these days. <cry>

I can't wait, not sure if I've ever been so excited for a new season.

No I can wait for Saturday, but only because I am at a wedding. As for the football, I am like a child old enough to understand his first Christmas.

don't know how old you are mate, but if atleast 23ish, you have to admit it has gone downhill these last 8 years - pretty much since abramovic came on the scene <mob> and with the amount of takeovers happening, soon you will need an arab just to stay up. in some ways the way its going i wish i had supported a team like carlisle in the 3rd tier - propper grounds etc like we experienced in the champo, but a club at their level. i will never not support newcaslte and obviously wont support anyone else, and the size of the club, fanbase etc wouldnt want us outside the premier league. but i just dont like the premier league. hard to explain

Couldn't agree more with this...just not feeling it for some reason?
I think its partly because last season was so good and it will be hard for this season to even get close to it.
There is now pressure on us. We will be expected to be up there...

I'm very excited! Watching meaningful NUFC games that make me go crazy, watching MOTD, watching random PL games and all that! I miss it!

Can't wait.

I think this might be a case of sentimental thinking. We always look back fondly on "the glory days", but the fact is, rich clubs have always dominated world football, and professional sports for that matter. Unfortunately this is nothing new, although the scale in which owners are spending has of course skyrocketed.
All that aside, I don't get hung up on the media bias, big spending, hype for the overrated players, and maybe that's because in Canada I'm not surrounded by media coverage for football, but I think really I make of it all what I can and don't let that other s**** ruin it for me.

I don't care if we haven't any big signings yet, our squad was great last season, and those players should only be ever better this year. Spurs and the league best look out!

You're mad, I can't frigging wait! I've really enjoyed the Olympics but it felt like something just to fill the space before the main event. God knows what we're gonna do next summer with no Olympics/Euros <worried>

Looking forward to it. Not as much as the Atromitos game though.

<diva>

Not surprised they didn't want to move the game though.

Pretty much this. It's a nostalgia thing, and part of getting old. Let's just enjoy it!

This echoes my feelings. Money has always been around in sport, and those with the most will always dominate it. It is exactly the same in athletics (although the money is on a smaller scale and not taken up by athlete wages), which you say you enjoyed so much. The only difference between football and most other sports, is that it is a popular sport worldwide which has allowed it to grow to an unprecedented level financially.

Also, you say the likes of Norwich and Ipswich were able to battle for 3-5th. When you think about it, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal are the only clubs I would say were streets ahead of the rest. Ourselves, Tottenham, Liverpool are pretty equal and then you have the likes of Everton and Fulham who have the potential to get into Europa places as well. Now out of all those clubs I have listed, only Chelsea and City have been taken over and gone on mad spending sprees to effectively buy the league. Man Utd have always had the power to buy big, but they are the first/second biggest club in the world. Arsenal and Spurs both have excellent financial policies that has allowed them to spend big over the past few years when it was needed.

Overall, whilst I don't agree with the amount of money being spent, it has lead to a more competitive league which can see any club beat another on there day. And that last point is why I cannot wait for the football to begin.

It's an event that happens every four years were 10,000 leeches descend on a host city and live the life of Riley for 17 days eating for free, avoiding payment for accommodation and transport before fecking off and waiting another four years for the next poor hapless city to be pillaged.

It also has some athletes who run around a bit, jump a bit and sometimes throw things a bit. I think there is also a bike involved. Oh, and a boat type thing too.

Ahh i've heard of that, isn't it where some under performing, average sportsmen/women get hyped to f*** and get loads of TV coverage for attaining a bronze medal at the most but the sportsmen and women who win gold in a minority sport are forgotten in a week.Sounds fair.I'd also heard that the whole country pays for it with very little benefit from it except of course the host city is this true????
