I'm taking it with a pinch of salt to be honest, I know we've heard Carrs out there, but I can't remember the last time we made transfer bids so public. If its true and we can't get a good deal just move onto the next target, not worth us getting held to ransom over a (albeit very good) fullback.

I know, but when's the last time that's happened? We seem to conduct everything behind closed doors, this just seems to be an attempt to get someone else in who would bid more, in which case we move on to the next right (or left) back on the magical Carr list.

Am I alone in being very impressed by our targets?

Wasn't that long ago we were signing Best, Gosling etc

Happy days. :)

I am very impressed. Debuchy has been one of France's best players and possibly the best right back in the tournament. And De Jong is very highly rated in Holland (although I have never seen him play).

To be fair, Pardew has made it fairly obvious that we were always after him in interviews just without saying his exact name.

I don't think you could keep a transfer for a player of this calibre during a big tournament quiet.

To he fair like most of the signings from the Championship season onwards Best was the right signing at the right time, just like Williamson and the loanees that year. Obviously time will tell on Gosling, but our transfer policy has been superb for about three years now.

we wont get him for anything under 7m, 8m i should imagine, he'd probably push sanga for 1st place right back in the french squad.

Have to agree with this. But that's why we're going in low, so that we can get him as cheap as possible.

I think we will need to bid €8M to get him.

Which is why I don't think we'll get him, nothing about our recent transfer dealings suggests we'd spunk £6-8m on a fullback. Remember Maiga? Heavily linked but couldn't get him for the right price and nailed Cisse on a steal. I think if a deal doesn't happen at a low price we'll move on to the next target.

I don't think we would put in this much time and effort and walk away

We spent 6.5 million on Santon, I dont see why we wouldnt pay a similar fee for a player who's so much better than Simpson (who we'll get a fee for).

But we already know that Carr has multiple targets in each position, so the time and work hasn't just been put in on Debuchy. I'd love to be wrong, but I just can't see us getting involved in a bidding war for him.

At the current exchange rate, €8 million (Lille's alleged valuation) is about £6.5 million, which isn't a lot for a French international full-back. Negotiate well and we might even get that down to under £6m.

If we do have another target of course it's irrelevant, but this seems too good to be a smokescreen.
