The National Anthem Thread.

Post by P.T.N »

So, as per usual when I go over to a thread where people talk about football ( <worried> ) I managed to just about derail the Spain vs Italy thread talking about National Anthems. <laugh>

So, our dearly beloved supreme overlord Skalps, asked me to create a thread on national anthems. I know certain people will get really into this. So, It would be nice if you Football Discussion lot don't come on here and derail the subject and start talking about football. I'd never do that to you, and it is also quite rude. ;)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, in my opinion this is by far the worst national anthem in the world.

It's just fell of self obsessed wankery. Quite frankly, when you see Yanks on the TV crying out of 'pride' I cringe. It also lasts far too long, and the tune is f***ing awful. Nope, the world would be a much better place without this crap.

Maybe the Yanks should shorten their anthem to something like this...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moving on, I fear I may be crucified by people for this. However, I feel it needs to be said. The next anthem, is terrifyingly bad. Infact, it's so bad that whenever I hear I want to rip my ears off. I'm personally of the belief thats why Van Gogh cut his ear off. Hearing this...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is also terrible because it reminds me of the above.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, this is a great national anthem. Especially, when sung at the rugby. It's spinetingling

What are your personal opinions on National anthems? Which are you favourites? Which do you hate?

Let it all out here.... <diva>

God Save The Queen is only a good national anthem if you believe in a god, the monarchy and music that makes your ears weep. There are dirges with more enthusiasm, nursery rhymes with better lyrics and more passion in a Gordon Brown speech. There is no good to be found within this wasteful presentation of tedium <disgrace>.

The idea of National Anthems is pretty stupid anyway, but if you must pick something - at least make it interesting <erk>.

I do understand the idea of a National Anthem. But, I feel they should be more about representing a country and it's people.

I do understand the idea of a National Anthem. But, I feel they should be more about representing a country and it's people.
Indeed. I've highlighted in red every line that I agree with:

God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen

O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour
Long may she reign
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Not in this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nations see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world over

From every latent foe
From the assassins blow
God save the Queen
O'er her thine arm extend
For Britain's sake defend
Our mother, prince, and friend
God save the Queen

I don't care for our National anthem, England should have it's own, I wouldn't mind Jerusalem.
I do rather like the German Anthem quite rousing, and I do like the French Anthem, 'La Marseillaise'.

I think if England was to have it's own anthem it should be something new

Is the Scottish one, 'Flower of Scotland'?
Not sure if it's the national anthem, Mr Ltf loves it, but as for 'Rule Britania, agree with you there, it's British again, we need something English.

A much better idea really. National Anthem lyrics are usually pointless nationalistic drivel anyway, far better to just have a piece of music that represents and unites.
